When the past and present collide…

Taya Kostas is a survivor. She’s clawed her way back from the hell she was subjected to at the hands of an undercover agent working for the U.S. government. Since then she’s dedicated her life to preventing the same from happening to anyone else. Now her story has come full circle. She’s about to take the stand as the key federal witness in the biggest terrorist case the country has seen in years. But even though the man responsible for her nightmares is behind bars, the evil she escaped is still hunting her. When fate places her safety in the hands of the man who saved her life once before, together they race to stay one step ahead of a lethal enemy.

He’ll risk it all to save her.

For five years Special Agent Nathan Schroder has been battling his inner demons, but lately it seems like he’s on the verge of losing that fight. Then Taya is suddenly thrust back into his life and in imminent danger, so he steps in to protect her. He’s never forgotten her or the way she held up under fire, and this time he’s not letting her walk away. The terrorists determined to prevent her from testifying will stop at nothing to silence her forever. She might be in official protective custody, but she’s way more than a job to Nate. When the enemy finally strikes and her life hangs in the balance, he’ll do anything to keep her safe.

Avenged Hostage Rescue Team Series Book 5 edition by Kaylea Cross Romance eBooks

Kaylea Cross did a great job with character development and plot in this 5th installment of her Hostage Rescue Team series. She began Nathan's development in previous novels, but only enough to tantalize the reader into needing to know everything about him!

His issues were portrayed well by the author. It is clear she did her homework in both the military and psychological sense. A few artistic liberties were taken regarding how the terrorist threat to the trial and witnesses were handled. It was necessary to the story, though, and Kaylea Cross kept it well within believable bounds. These qualities are both refreshing to find in an author and well appreciated by the reader.
Taya's character was written quite well. Normally, I'm not a fan of cougar romances, (6 yr age difference here), but Nathan NEEDED the wisdom and maturity that came with those few extra years. Taya's knowledge and understanding of herself, gained through therapy and self reflection, allowed healing from her tragedies that Nathan lacked and desperately needed. She was able to reach the dark place within himself brought on by Nathan's own traumatic experiences. He knew he had reached a critical point where his poor coping mechanisms had turned into NOT being able to cope at all, causing concern amongst his team leader and commander.
Taya needed the vision of herself through Nathan's eyea to heal even more. He sees a survivor in her, not a victim. He sees a strong, brave, loving, capable warrior within her. She's the beautiful and sexy light of his life. Through Nathan, Taya gains more insight into the best of herself. Through Taya, Nathan sees a path out of the darkness; a way to put his past where it belongs and move forward. Nathan began his journey to change before Taya but he may not have been able to be whole without her influence and love.
I admired the author's handling of individual and shared past trauma, together with ongoing, severe stressors. She didn't fall into the PTSD trap authors write themselves into so (too!) often. Taya and Nathan both found themselves with far too many complexities making up their individual mental and emotional states to ever fit within the parameters of a four letter PTSD label handed down to every person since the early 1990's, at least, who has had mild, unexpected reactions after experiencing emotional pain, physical injury and/or mental stress accrued while living life, to those with full blown psychosis resulting from purely unimaginable, horrifically tragic circumstances.
Even the 19 yr old Syrian refugee terrorist characterization is superbly drawn. He was vulnerable to radicalization due to his pain and anger at the financial hardships and drastic lifestyle change brought on by true to life current events in the Middle East, specifically Ayman's homeland of Syria. Older men at his American neighborhood mosque, on the lookout for older children and young adults to exploit, to further the insanity and violence of their cause found just what they wanted in Ayman. They used his grief over not just his own personal and familial tragedy but also the cultural and ethnic tragedies in his homeland in order to turn him into their violent marionette. Cross shows a keen understanding of political, militaristic and humanitarian world events in her finely crafted characters and plotlines. She clearly understands and lays out for readers the complexities of survivor's guilt and PTSD, with a small dash of Stockholm Syndrome for good measure. The only thing possibly lacking is the less than stellar counterterrorism actions regarding the intel and chatter comprising an active, credible threat and how security for the trial. However, without the fictional Homeland Security shortcomings, the last 3/4 of the book wouldn't have been possible. In that light, I'm more than willing to accept the tradeoff.
Definitely worth the read and my favorite HRT book in this series, so far!

Avenged Hostage Rescue Team Series Book 5 edition by Kaylea Cross Romance eBooks Reviews

This time around we get Nate and Taya's story. Five years ago Nate was one of the men who saved her. She'd been kidnaped and is now scheduled to testify is a huge trial to bring down the man behind it. There was something special between them almost immediately and through her recovery, Nate stayed in touch. However Nate gradually cut ties afraid of the emotions Taya brought out in him. Nate never forgot her though and thought of her often. But he suffered guilt since one of his best friends was killed that day. Nightmares and anxiety were a daily occurrence and he'd been dealing by losing himself in meaningless one night stands.

When his team is sent to protect Taya as the trial gets closer, Nate realizes how much he cares about her and how much he's missed her. He'll do whatever he has to in order to keep her safe, and this time he's not going to let her go.

Taya has thought of Nate during the last five years and missed him more that she realized. When he shows up as part of her security detail, she's excited to see him again. Taya doesn't know that he shares the same feelings for her that she has for him. As the danger increases and more threats are made to her life, Nate is the man she wants by her side protecting her.

Loved it. This group of hot military men are so flippin hot. They're all tough and highly specialized at what they do, but when you put them around the women they love, they're soft, sweet and romantic. I can't wait to see whose story is next.
Nate was one of my favorite characters from early on. There was just something about him. And reading his story and finding out exactly why he's the way he is - aka Dr. Feelgood - was worth the wait.

Nate and Taya met when he rescued her and her husband from a terrorist cell. The husband was the man the terrorist "gave" her to, not a man she loved. Her husband and Nate's best friend both died on the way out of the region where they were being held. When Taya returns to Nate's life to testify against the terrorist who held her so many years ago, Nate can't stay away.

Taya is an amazing character. I can't even begin to describe how strong and trustworthy she is. Again, there are procedural things that occur in this book that are a little unbelievable but they make for such a good story I can overlook them.
This book is a great addition to the HRT Series and a must read that can standalone. Kaylea Cross is a master storyteller, expertly developing compelling characters and a suspenseful storylIne. This book is one of my favorites.

Nathan, new to the HRT team, is a damaged hero caught in a downward spiral and using sex as his drug of choice, when he learns his next op involves providing security for a federal witness, a woman he met five years earlier and has never forgotten. Taya was rescued from captivity in Afghanistan by Nathan and his pararescue unit and has never forgotten him either. She is scheduled to testify against the terrorist who had her kidnapped, held hostage, then married off to one of his men. She survived captivity and the rescue, but her "husband" and Nathan's best friend were both killed during the extraction. While Nathan still struggles with survivor's guilt and PTSD, he finds Taya has been able to move forward.

The spark between them ignites as the trial date approaches, but a cell on US soil is also counting down on their plot to take out the witnesses, including Taya and her bodyguards, and to rescue their leader, spiriting him back to their homeland. As Witsec takes over her security for the trial, Nathan and his HRT teammates try to stay ahead of the threat in order to keep her alive.
